Представление данных в виде набора полосок различной ширины. Для считывания штрихового кода и ввода данных в компьютер для дальнейшей обработки применяются специальные сканирующие устройства.
Штриховое кодирование продукции (товаров) осуществляется путем использования международной универсальной системы товарной нумерации Ассоциации товарной нумерации продукции (EAN), внедрение которой на территории Российской Федерации и стран СНГ ведет Ассоциация автоматической идентификации "ЮНИСКАН". Позволяет быстро и точно считать информацию о товаре с помощью электронного устройства - сканера. Товар кодируется по двум основным признакам: материал, используемый при изготовлении товара; сфера потребления товара. Отсутствие штрихкода весьма усложняет продвижение товара на рынке.
Состав кода формируется следующим образом. Товары США и Канады имеют код из 12 цифр, остальные товары 63 членов EAN - 13 цифр. Первые две (три) цифры - код государства, с 4-й по 7-ю цифру - информация о предприятии-изготовителе, с 8-й по 12-ю цифру - информация о товаре. Дочернее предприятие или лицензионный товар могут использовать штрихкод основного владельца.
Коды государств: 00-09 - США и Канада; 30-37 - Франция; 380 - Болгария; 383 - Словения; 400-440 - Германия; 460-469 - Россия; 471 - Тайвань; 489 - Гонконг; 45-49 - Япония; 50 - Великобритания; 529 - Кипр; 539 - Ирландия; 54 - Бельгия, Люксембург; 560 - Португалия; 569 - Исландия; 57 - Дания; 590 - Польша; 599 - Венгрия; 64 - Финляндия; 690 - Китай; 70 - Норвегия; 72 - Израиль; 73 - Швеция; 750 - Мексика; 76 - Швейцария; 770 - Колумбия; 775 - Перу; 780 - Чили; 786 - Эквадор; 789 - Бразилия; 80-83 - Италия; 84 - Испания; 86(9) - Турция; 87 - Нидерланды; 90-91 - Австрия; 92-99 - Австралия.
